I know I might be old because of the fact that I use e-mail. I know there is instant messaging, text messaging and ESP messaging (if there isn't, Google should get to work on it).
But, e-mail still is a viable option for sending someone something that is not worthy of a stamp.
But with the inventions of instant messaging, e-mail has become the new snail mail, which I guess would make postage mail sloth mail.
But not helping e-mail is the fact that it is not evolving with Web 2.0 (I don't know what that is but I read that is what the internet is but don't worry it still carries porn). It seems more that sites like facebook and digg are replacing the need for email. And that is not necessary a problem but not everyone I know uses facebook or digg. Come on grandma, get with the program.
With postage mail, everyone has a mailbox. But if everyone had those cool bank drive-thru carriers, everyone would use those. But the problem is, not everyone has them. The same problem with using facebook or other social sites to send messages.
With the constant updating of the net, e-mail has been at a standstill. I can't remember the last big innovation with email. Sure more storage, improved spam filters but that's like adding more cup holders to a new SUV model. I'm talking about the ability to embed parts of web sites or an easier way to send email without having to go to your inbox, search through your contacts, type in a subject line, etc.
At work, I read about 40-80 news stories a day. No exaggeration. I'm that guy who reads about the man in India that had his twin brother growing in his stomach and sends it to friends. If i have friends on facebook I want to share the story with, all i have to do is click on the "Share on Facebook" tab, type their names and presto, they get a message with the first graphs of the story, maybe a photo and a link to the story.
But for my non-facebook friends, I have to click on the e-mail link in the story, THEN log in to my e-mail account and look up my friends' email address. Sorry, but does anyone remember anyone's e-mail address? Is Kendra's e-mail Kolds or KendraOlds? (This would be solved if everyone had an email address assigned to them ala phone numbers but that is a different arguement). So after I copy and paste everyone's email, then I can share the story.
But isn't the facebook way easier and cooler? Why don't email companies get on the ball and improve their service so they don't go the way of fax machines and Polaroid.
Ok, I'm done.
