‘30 Rock’ product placement

Finally . . . Tina Fey’s new sitcom is on the air. What I thought was a laugh at General Electric’s expense (which owns NBC) looks to be a product-placement pitch.
In the premiere, Alex Baldwin’s character compares the show to an actually GE product, the Trivection oven. He goes on for several minutes and even speaks in front of poster of the product.
At first, I laugh. I wasn’t even sure the product was real, because it sounded far fetched (it was described as using three types of heat: thermal, convection and microwave, to cook food faster). But then at commercial break, what do I see? A spot for the exact oven being pitched on the show.
Blah. Even more, if you go to GE’s web site, there’s a note about the oven being featured on the show.
So what was suppose to be a shot at GE ended up being a product tie-in. I had been waiting for this show for awhile. After being disappointed with “Studio 60” I was hoping this was going to be my new show. I guess we’ll see how the show develops and see if the makers of the show get off their knees for GE.
