Next year is my 10-year high school reunion. 10 years!
I'm not necessary planning on going but it reminds me of how old I am.
It's been 10 years since I told people I was going to be a writer. 10 years since I was still looking for my first sexual conquest. An entire decade since I had my entire adult life ahead of me.
Now, what do I have to show?
As part of my reflection back on my life before I officially enter my late 20s, I compare myself to NASA.
In 1969, America flew three men to the moon and back. A huge endeavor right?
Back then, the Apollo shuttles has less computing power than a modern cellphone. But after a 33-year absent from the moon, President Bush announced we were going back, but it is not going to be easy.
It's going to cost $100 billion dollars and take 12 years just to get back to where we were 38 years ago. I face the same dilemma.
10 years ago, I was able to run a 5k (3.1 miles) under 20 minutes. And this was after I slammed down a Coke and ate pizza for lunch. But now, as I prepare to run a 10k on my 27th birthday, even coming in at 2x my pace in high school is going to be a tall order.
I'm sure people ask the same of NASA, why did you stop when you were already there? If you hadn't stop, you wouldn't be in this situation.
Yes, we (yes, I am speaking for NASA), we know. But at least we are trying right?
But like NASA, I have new technology to help me get back to where I was. In high school, I had a tape player to keep me occupied as I worked through the last mile on a uphill run. Now, I got an iPod to distract me as my legs burn as I run up the street.
I also plan on getting a Nike+ Sportsband, which will eliminate all guessing in how far I've ran and how far I gotta go to get home. In high school, we had mile markers.
On Memorial Day at the Bolder Boulder, I'm not planning on being in my high school shape. I'm just hoping to start a path that gets me there.
